My Go-To Healthcare Work Essentials for Long Shifts

Working in healthcare means long hours on your feet, unpredictable days, and very little room for discomfort. After years of trial and error, I’ve narrowed down the scrubs, shoes, and essentials that actually get me through long shifts comfortably—without knee, hip, or back pain.

These are the items I rely on every single shift and genuinely consider worth the investment.

Comfortable, Long-Lasting Scrubs

Every shift, I wear FIGS scrubs—and for good reason. I bought mine in 2023, and they still look brand new. No pilling, no fading, and no wash wear, even after countless laundry cycles.

They’re incredibly comfortable, breathable, and structured enough to look polished while still allowing me to move freely throughout my shift. For anyone working long hours, high-quality scrubs are absolutely worth the investment.


Supportive Shoes (The Most Important Part of Any Uniform)

Shoes are hands down the most important part of a healthcare uniform. I’ve tried many brands over the years, and only two have consistently kept me pain-free:

  • Dansko clogs – My go-to when I’m wearing wide-leg scrubs. They provide excellent support and durability. I’ve had my current pair for over three years, and they’re still going strong.

  • Brooks Ghost tennis shoes – Perfect for jogger scrubs. These give me the cushioning and stability I need for long days on hard hospital floors.

Both options help prevent knee, hip, and back pain, which makes an enormous difference during long shifts.



Compression Socks for All-Day Comfort

I never work a shift without compression socks. They help reduce leg pain, improve circulation, and prevent varicose veins—especially important when you’re standing or walking most of the day. This is one of the simplest additions that makes a noticeable difference.


Stethoscope I Trust

I use a Littmann Cardiology stethoscope, and it’s been the easiest for me to hear clearly in busy, noisy environments. When accuracy matters, having a reliable stethoscope makes a huge difference in confidence and performance.


Backpack That Holds It All

A good work bag is essential. My backpack comfortably holds everything I need for the day, and the side pockets are large enough to fit my Stanley tumbler, which is a huge plus.

Staying hydrated during long shifts is tough, but my Stanley makes it easy. It’s the only cup I consistently reach for throughout the day.



Lunch Box for Long Days

Long shifts require fuel. I use a lunch box that fits my breakfast, lunch, and snacks so I’m always prepared—no matter how busy the day gets. Having everything packed and ready helps me stay energized and avoid skipping meals.


Layers for Cold Hospital Days

Hospitals are freezing. I always bring a scrub jacket or long-sleeve layer to stay warm during my shift. Lightweight layers make it easy to stay comfortable without restricting movement.
