Recently, my family and I went on a New Year’s cruise, and it was truly an incredible way to ring in the New Year. It was packed with unforgettable moments and memories we’ll cherish forever.

The less glamorous part? Figuring out what to pack.

I am a major vacation planner—I leave no stone unturned. Before we ever set sail, I watched countless videos, read endless articles, and followed cruise accounts on Instagram until cruise planning was basically my personality.

After spending a full week at sea, I’ve put together a list of the items I definitely recommend bringing on a cruise—things that made our trip smoother, more comfortable, and way more enjoyable. If you’re planning a cruise (especially over the holidays), this list will save you time, stress, and a few “I wish I had brought that” moments.

General Boat Must-Haves

  • Essential Documents: Once you board the ship all you need is the key to your cabin. It will unlock your door, be your identity, and your currency. I bought this two pack of lanyards (pictured above) for my husband and I. I loved that they were detachable so we could unclip them and hand them to people when necessary. I kept my card and my son's in my lanyard and they were both visible when placed back-to-back.

  • Luggage Tag Protectors: We stapled our luggage tags to our luggage prior to arriving to the port. I was very nervous they would not stay on and we would lose our luggage. I immediately bought these for my next cruise. You can get different sizes based on which cruise line you are with. I have personally bought this product, and love it. I do receive a small commission for this product at no extra cost to you.

  • Motion Sickness Remedies: Pills, wristbands, or natural alternatives to ensure comfort on rough seas.

I brought one of each on the ship, as I was taking no chances with sea sickness. Motion sickness patches ended up being our most effective choice. My son, husband, and I all wore one behind our ear and it kept the nausea at bay. They come in a 32 pack, and 1 patch lasts 3 days. They stayed on despite swimming, snorkeling, and water slides. I highly recommend them.

  • Towel Clips: These would be helpful on a windy day by the pool. However, these were GREAT for keeping clothes in place on our balcony chairs to dry.

  • Wrinkle Spray: Fun fact: You cannot bring your steamer. My steamer is my go-to so when I found out that I had to go without AND the only iron is in the laundry room, I panicked. This travel wrinkle spray worked great. Just spray and shake. Easy as that!

  • Magnetic Hooks: The rooms are small, but the walls are metal. These hooks gave us extra places to hang things. Small but mighty, they could hold quite a bit of weight, and they kept our room tidy.

  • Packing Cubes: These are great for keeping things organized while you pack. They are also great for keeping closets organized while you cruise. The rooms are small, so I put each packing cube in the closet and stored my luggage under the bed. It saved so much space.

  • Power Strip/Adapter: For charging multiple devices in limited cabin outlets.

Our cabin had 2 outlets total. I liked this power adapter for the amount of access it had, and also the fast charging ability. It allowed us to recharge devices quickly and get back to the fun. 2 chargers for the price of one is also a huge bonus for me!

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated aboard without constantly buying bottled water.

My family did not purchase the drink package so we took full advantage of the water, tea, and lemonade. Reusable tumblers made it easy to refill, and stay hydrated. I had read different things about Yeti and Stanley cups being taken. For this reason my son and my husband got cheap cups/bottles for the cruise. They worked great, and are now a household favorite as well. Personally, I couldn't part with my Stanley so I brought it and had no issues with it being taken. I have linked the tumbler and Stanley below. Both come in a variety of colors.

  • Lightweight Backpack or Tote Bag: For carrying daily essentials around the ship or during excursions.

We flew to our cruise port, so I had to leave the big chunky bags at home. This beach bag and backpack both fit in my suitcase completely flat. They held EVERYTHING. Depending on our port we would sometimes carry one or the other. The backpack came in very handy when we had a long walk, and it surprisingly held a ton of a stuff. Other days we only used it for our snorkel gear, water shoes, and wet things.

Beach and Port Essentials

  • Quick-Dry Towel: Easy to carry and dries fast for spontaneous beach visits.

  • Flip Flops and Water Shoes: Comfortable for sandy shores and rocky port areas. Emphasis on the water shoes. I was surprised at the amount of coral shelves and sea urchins. I never went into the water without shoes.

  • Sunglasses with UV Protection: Eye protection while enjoying sunshine.

  • Beach Hat or Cap: Keeps sun off face and adds a stylish touch. If you need a great packable option a roll up sun hat is for you. I have personally flown mine all over the world.

  • Light Cover-Up or Sarong: Useful for transitioning from beach to ship or local restaurants. A cover up is required to enter the buffet area as well. I loved this super cute Cupshe cover up.

  • Portable Phone Charger: Keeps devices powered for photos and navigation while exploring.

  • Local Currency or Small Cash: Handy for quick purchases in ports. If you can, do not use your cards in the ports at all.

  • Waterproof Phone Case: Protect devices when around pools or on wet decks. I bought this case and used it while snorkeling. Here is a picture I took, using this case, while we were snorkeling. A little blurry, but my phone still works, so take it as proof that it is definitely waterproof.

  • Waterproof Fanny Pack: In addition to the waterproof phone case we also had waterproof fanny packs. These came in very handy on beaches that we couldn't leave anything on the beach. I had my passport, phone, and money with me. This fanny pack kept everything dry while I swam. It's nothing fancy, but the peace of mind was great!

My Favorite Bathing Suits

  • Classic One-Piece: Flattering, comfortable, and versatile for both pool and water activities.

  • High-Waisted Bikini Sets: Stylish retro vibe with added coverage and support.

  • Sporty Swimwear: Suitable for water sports and active excursions.

  • Bold Prints and Bright Colors: Adds fun and personality while on deck or at the beach.

  • Cover-Up Friendly Options: Swimsuits that layer well under cover-ups for ease and style.

Outfits I Wore or Recommend

  • Casual Daywear: Lightweight dresses, shorts, and tees perfect for on-deck lounging or port excursions.

  • Evening Attire: Simple yet elegant dresses or smart casual outfits for dining and events.

  • Layering Pieces: Lightweight jackets or wraps for cooler evenings or windy decks.

  • Multi-Purpose Pieces: Clothes that can transition from day to night with minimal changes.

Shoes I Wore

  • Comfortable Sneakers: Essential for exploring ports and walking long distances. These are also required for some ship activities. So don't leave them behind!

  • Flip Flops or Sandals: Preferred for poolside and beach days.

  • Water Shoes: Practical for rocky beaches or water-based excursions. Sea urchins and coral shelves are everywhere. Ouch!

  • Dressy Heels or Wedges: Add style for formal dinners or special cruise events without sacrificing comfort.
